Art historian Petronela Soltész leads visitors through the exhibition Rausche: Echoes of an Institution and offers insights into the legacy of the Centre for Art Exhibitions of the GDR (ZfK) and its extensive collection, which today forms part of the ifa art collection. As the collection’s archivist, she sheds light on the history of the graphic works in the ZfK’s collection and their enduring significance for German art history.
The tour places particular emphasis on the work of HAP Grieshaber. This eminent woodcut artist played an exceptional role in the art scene of divided Germany. He was one of the few artists to gain widespread recognition in both the Federal Republic and the GDR, and was probably the only one who, as a cross-border artist, was represented simultaneously by a travelling exhibition in the GDR and a monographic touring exhibition at the ifa. His close ties to the ZfK and his conviction that coming to terms with the Nazi past was a shared task for both German states make his work an important starting point for re-examining the cultural interconnections between East and West.
